宵夜街 Midnight Snacks Street

When it comes to food, the most important place around our campus is the Midnight Snacks Street. There are a variety of stands, snack bars, restaurants and bubble tea cafes right down the Street. No matter how early in the morning or late at night, you will always find something appetizing there. The little street is especially crowded with people during midterm or finals week: if you come at night, you don’t even need to move your feet because an ocean of people will push you forward.

Now let’s move into the Street. You see a mini food court on the right. It is called the Street of Dark foods, and it serves noodles, lunch boxes, chou mein, tofu pudding and so on. It’s like a supermarket for snacks, you can choose whatever you want here. Further on down, we come to a very popular stand, called the Wishing Well; it is always crowded with people at dining time and its soya-mixed meat soaked in a delicious soup is the classic favorite item. As you look to the right and the left, you will see all kinds of snacks made fresh daily.

To the surprise of the university, as the news spread, many students were opposed to it. Because at that time, the fourth girls’ dorm was near completion but the university declared that there was no funding for curtains over the windows to protect the girl students’ privacy. So the students then asked the school authorities not to buy the expensive sculpture, but to purchase curtains for the dorm. “We want the curtains, not the sculpture” was their slogan. I might add here that this was one of the first student protests on campus. This action finally forced the university to come up with more funding to satisfy the need of the girls’ dorm. The Street may seem quite short, but if you make a right, here at the end of the Street, and walk for 2 more minutes, you will find a shop called Shao-Bing Kiln, which is famous for its jumbo crispy sesame-seed pastries. These are also extremely popular among students of NCU.

In addition to offering tasty foods, the Midnight Snacks Street also functions as a popular spot forgatherings of extracurricular activities or associations. In the evenings, students often gather at the bubble tea cafe, order their drinks, and proceed with their meetings till late at night. Many important activities were born here in the cafes. Midnight Snacks Street is already an indispensiblepart of NCU. If you stay on campus long enough to develop an appetite, you are sure to find your satisfaction here.
